From Shaft to Salty Balls: A Video Tribute to Isaac Hayes

The music world lost a vastly influential icon yesterday with the passing of Grammy-and-Oscar-winning soul maestro Isaac Hayes at age 65. From honing his chops at Stax Records as part of the legendary session band there to scoring one of the most indelible and recognizable - and all around awesome - film scores with Shaft to later reintroducing his unmistakeable baritone to an entirely new generation as Chef on South Park, Hayes’ artistic reach and talents simply cannot be overstated. Enjoy the following selection of videos as we salute a legend…

“Walk On By” - performed live on “Music Scene”, 1969 (above)

Shaft Opening Scene, 1971 (above)

“Stormy Monday” - from the 1973 “Save The Children” concert (above)

“Soulville” - performed at Wattstax (above)

“Fragile” video, 1995 (above)

“Chocolate Salty Balls” - from South Park, 1998
