Countdown: My Favorite Albums From Each Year I’ve Been Alive

Boy, I’m really letting you see behind the curtain here. There’ll be no question as to what my favorite albums are anymore, they’re (mostly) all spelled out for you nice and easy right here. Keyword: favorite. I didn’t set about trying to discern the “best” records from each year; rather, I’ve followed in Maura and Jeff’s (and others) footsteps and created a list of my favorite albums from every year I’ve been alive, as per DYFL’s instructions.

I decided to go the route of picking the album for each year based upon my current tastes rather than my taste at the time. Frankly, the list of my favorites at the time wouldn’t be that much different than this one excepting 1980, ‘81, ‘83, ‘85, ‘89, ‘91, and ‘01. And I definitely wasn’t aware enough in the ’70s to know my favorite albums…

Anyway, I imposed a few other rules on myself to save the list from becoming a list that only features records by The Smiths. The few basic rules: one album per artist and greatest hits and live albums are fair game. As a bonus, I’ve scattered eight MP3s from albums in the list throughout. Good? Let’s get on with it then so you can yell at me and leave your own list* in the comments.

1975 - Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here
1976 - Rush, 2112
1977 - Kraftwerk, Trans-Europe Express

2002 - The Streets, Original Pirate Material
2003 - British Sea Power, The Decline of British Sea Power :: “Something Wicked”
2004 - Arcade Fire, Funeral

2006 - Mastodon, Blood Mountain
2007 - The National, Boxer
2008 - Kelly Polar, I Need You to Hold on While the Sky Is Falling :: “A Feeling Of The All-Thing”

Obviously 2008 is still TBD, but I wanted to pick something to represent the current year and Kelley Polar’s I Need You to Hold on While the Sky Is Falling is my favorite thus far. Regardless, I stand by this list as accurately representing 34 of my very most favorite albums ever. Now show me yours.

hey, I expected some shit for some of my picks… wouldn’t be a list post without it!

but Dave, most definitely The Immaculate Collection. first of all, i found myself thinking of picking a Madonna album for at least 1984, 1985, and 1989. but other records ended up on top for those years. so really, as much as i love Madonna (and I do LOVE Madonna), it was a no brainer to tweak the rules and allow greatest hits albums.

and in that case, Immaculate Collection is by far one of my most listened to albums ever. i think i’ve owned it thrice on CD and also own the vinyl…

yep. now you see that the wizard is just a little man who loves Madonna! of course i’ve never really shied away from letting that fact be known.

*as an aside, i really could write an essay on the whole process i went through for picking the records on this list. but i figured i’d spare ya’ll the wordy words.
**extra aside… from the lists already posted here, these are records that i really wanted to put on my list. i’m just saying, it was a hard thing to do to leave these puppies off…

1983 - New Order - Power, Corruption & Lies
1984 - Madonna, Like a Virgin
1985 - Wham!, Make It Big
1986 - Madonna, True Blue
1987 - George Michael, Faith
1989 - Madonna, Like A Prayer
1990 - Depeche Mode, Violator
1991- Nirvana, Nevermind
1992 - Sublime - 40 Oz. To Freedom
1993 - Liz Phair, Exile in Guyville
1994 - Weezer - The Blue Album
1995 - Pulp, Different Class
1996 - Belle & Sebastian, If You’re Feeling Sinister
2000 - Radiohead - Kid A
2003 - The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We’re Gone?

i like this game.

Miso (味噌?) is a traditional Japanese food produced by fermenting rice, barley and/or soybeans, with salt and the fungus

I originally came here to download that PJ Harvey song (did a Hype Machine search for PJ songs), but was thrown back by the concept of this list of yours.

This is a really good idea…. I think I’m gonna steal it for my own blog. :)
