“Impeach the President” was a 1973 song written by Roy C. Hammond and recorded with his band The Honey Drippers. The angularly funky track features sharp guitar licks and horn stabs very representative of funky soul music of the era. It was Roy’s call to action following the Watergate scandal and one of many politically charged songs he’d record with the band; however, what the track would most become known for in the 35 years since its original release was neither melody nor message. No, this song laid down one of the quintessential breaks in music history and was destined for an unimaginable kind of success in a genre yet to be invented. Dusty Nuggets covered a bit of the history of the track about a year ago, another site put together a mix based on the sampling of it last year as well… most recently, Audiotuts compiled a list of the 8 Most Over-used Samples In Hip Hop History and declared “Impeach the President” by The Honey Drippers #1 Most Over-used Sample In Hip Hop History.
