Madonna turned the big 5-0 this past Saturday and while EAR FARM did nothing “official” to mark the occasion, you better believe much of the weekend was dedicated to an appreciation of her music, video, and fashion skills. The main focus: her entire catalog.
While perusing Rolling Stone’s Top 50 Albums of All Time and listening to her fifth studio album, Erotica, something occurred to me. Namely, that many of the albums from that list - and a few other great albums not on their list - had massively (unintentional) Erotica-esque titles. Remember, this was Madonna’s overtly über-sexual phase and nearly everything she was doing was fueled with heavy innuendo and/or titillating in a very blunt manner. She’d already raised a few eyebrows with her too-hot-for-MTV video “Justify My Love”, released her first book, Sex, and was giving the tracks on Erotica obviously coital names such as “Bad Girl”, “Why’s It So Hard”, “Fever”, “Did You Do It?”, and “Where Life Begins”.
See if a few of the fifty classic album titles below don’t sound as though they might fit really well next to the aforementioned songs on Erotica. Some of these you may have to bend your imagination a bit for; but then others, such as “Please Please Me” or “Dirty Mind” or a good portion of the rest of this list, could very easily be bonus tracks that were recorded but never included on the final version of the album. “Fever isn’t such a new thing, fever started long ago…”
