Endless Summer: an Outdoor Concert Mix Tape from Brooklyn Based and EAR FARM

Roughly two months ago, Nicole Davis from Brooklyn Based (an essential newsletter focusing on Brooklyn’s best food, art, services, shops and people - subscribe HERE) got in touch and asked me to help create a mix of Brooklyn-based bands. It was a ton of fun and the resulting mix (HERE) turned out to be a great listen. Well, guess what….. we’re back!

Our second EAR FARM/Brooklyn Based collaboration is all about bands playing some of New York City’s free outdoor concerts — SummerStage, Prospect Park’s Celebrate Brooklyn, JellyNYC’s Pool Parties, the Seaport Music Fest, and Siren - this summer. All of the songs are tracks that have been offered for FREE by the corresponding bands - in other words, this mix is 100% legal and entirely free. Boat Drinks!

Look for another Brooklyn Based/EAR FARM mix in the near future. For now, click through to listen, download, and find out when and where you can see each band this summer…

You forgot to mention the most important part of that Deerhoof show - they’re covering/reworking Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring”!

Wait, they are? Where’d you read that??

I didn’t mention that because I wasn’t quite sure what the deal is in terms of just what Deerhoof will be playing. Are they playing The Rite: Remixed? Is Metropolis Ensemble? Are they both together (I guess so…)?

Here, check this:

“Friday, July 18, 7:30 p.m.
with Metropolis Ensemble - The Rite: Remixed
Deerhoof is paired, via the forward thinking Wordless Music Series, with a world premiere by Metropolis Ensemble, led by Artistic Director/Conductor Andrew Cyr. The Rite: Remixed is a collaboration with composers and live electronics producer/performers Ryan Francis, Leo Leite, and Ricardo Romaneiro, who re-conceptualize Stravinsky’s monumental The Rite of Spring through the lens of the latest sounds and technology from electronica. The work combines keyboards and laptops with huge percussion and brass ensembles to create a futuristic, rhythm-inspired sonic tableau.

$3 suggested donation. At the Bandshell.”

About the other works:
Synthetic Mosaic: II is a collaboration between Ricardo Romaneiro performing live electronics and pianist/composer Ola Gjeilo known for his live improvisations. This work is a revised version of Synthetic Mosaic (2005), with soundscapes and floating piano improvisations, it takes the listener on a journey from light to dark then back to light.

Two-Part Belief, by composer Ricardo Romaneiro, employs similar ground-breaking technological and performative techniques to a new end: the creation of a new music composition. Newly conceived electronic sound banks function like a live chorus of color, shaped and sculpted in real-time much like a vocal performance. Using the poetry of Christopher Cahill as a point of departure, soprano Hila Plitmann will weave ghost-like vocal lines into a tapestry of spectral harmonies.

Building on a series of acclaimed live electronic improvisations in several cities, Ricardo Romaneiro’s Digital Cities elides the visual topography of computer chips and cityscapes through the media of digital and acoustic composition and performance.

About the Artists

The Metropolis Ensemble is a professional chamber orchestra dedicated to emerging the next generation of performers and composers. Founded in 2006 by conductor Andrew Cyr, the Metropolis Ensemble performs and commissions new music in addition to presenting some of the most influential works of the 20th Century. To learn more, visit: http://www.metropolisensemble.org

Electro-classical composer Ricardo Romaneiro (b. 1979) ‘is reinventing classical music one color at a time’ (Esquire Magazine, America’s Best and Brightest 2007) by painting his music in a sonic and stylistic kaleidoscope.

Ryan Anthony Francis’s (b. 1981) compositions have been met with audience and critical acclaim throughout the United States and France. His works have been variously described “compelling” (Los Angeles Times) and “shimmering”, “focused” and “rhythmically sharp-edged” (New York Times).

Brazilian born sound engineer and producer Leo Leite (b. 1977) is one of the world’s most sought-after artists in audio engineering and design, collaborating with dj SASHA, Barry Jamieson, Charlie May, Groove Armada, Layo & Buchwacka, and Christopher Lawrence, among others.

Soprano Hila Plitmann has become a leading light on the international music scene, regularly premiering works by today’s top composers with the world’s great orchestras and conductors.

Conductor Andrew Cyr has collaborated with the world’s top performers and composers of contemporary music, most recently appearing at The Times Center with Kiera Duffy, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Anna Polonsky and Ryan Francis. His debut as recording artist featuring the music of Avner Dorman was made with Grammy-winner Classical Producer of the Year (2005) David Frost, and is scheduled for international release in the fall of 2008.
